‘… a little different, but the same.’

Cuban-German history in the GDR and FRG – 1964 to present

Around 30,000 Cubans went to the GDR for training, study, or employment from the 1960s until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some of them still live in the Federal Republic today. In the special exhibition ‘… a little different, but the same,’ ten women, men, and their children share their daily lives in the socialist GDR: How did they experience work and school, how did friendships and new loves develop? The peaceful revolution in the autumn of 1989 was a significant event for them, just like the 1990s marked by racism and nationalism. Films, video interviews, photos, and personal memorabilia bring their story to life.

The exhibition can be seen at the German Emigration Center from November 20, 2022, to February 28, 2023; admission is included in the museum ticket.

The exhibition is part of the project ‘Your Story.’ Rarely do people with migration experiences appear as contemporary witnesses of German history. They are often only asked about the context of their personal or family migration history – thus, they are frequently not perceived as part of German history. Over the course of the project,‘Your Story’a total of four traveling exhibitions will be created by 2024 to convey migration as part of German history. The exhibitions will be displayed in various cities across the Federal Republic.

Starting March 15, 2023, the exhibition ‘… a little different, but the same.’ will be on view in Berlin at the Museum in the Cultural Brewery, Foundation House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany.„… bisschen anders, aber genauso.“ Newsbild 3
