Family Research
On the Trail of Emigrants
During the tour in our exhibition, you will have the opportunity for personal research, such as tracing emigrated ancestors.
The admission price includes independent family research during the museum’s opening hours. Here, you have access to two external online databases that provide comprehensive information about emigrated individuals.

The following databases are available for your independent research during your museum visit:
AncestryThe American company Ancestry collaborates with the National Archives in Washington: The archive houses the passenger lists of ships that arrived from all over the world at U.S. ports. The Hamburg passenger lists for the years between 1877 and 1914 are also included. Additionally, U.S. census records, conducted every ten years since 1790, are available. Numerous other registers and lists supplement the database, which can be used in both English and German. At the Deutsches Auswandererhaus, we only provide access to the database consisting of historical registers and lists when using ancestry.com. We do not offer access to the DNA database from ancestry.com (AncestryDNA).
Bremen Passenger Lists 1920 – 1939The archive of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce contains nearly 3,000 passenger lists from Bremen ships. This represents 70 percent of the passenger lists from ships that traveled from Bremen (Bremerhaven) to the USA, Canada, South America, or Australia in 1907/1908, 1913/1914, and between 1920 and 1939. All other Bremen passenger lists have been destroyed. The lists post-1945 are still under data protection and are housed in the Bremen State Archives (DIE MAUS).
On weekends (Saturday and Sunday) as well as during the school holidays (Bremen & Lower Saxony), a staff member of the DAH will assist you with your research in the genealogical databases from 2 PM to 4 PM. During this time, you can also print your research results directly at the information stand for a fee.
Outside of these times, you can independently research in our databases. It is not possible to send research results to your home via email. The email function displayed on the screen is deactivated for data protection reasons. You can capture your research results as a photo of the screen with your mobile camera.
