Academy of Comparative Migration Studies

The Academy of Comparative Migration Studies (ACOMIS) was opened at the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven in the summer of 2021. It is an extramural research institution and an educational institute for museum education and “Lifelong Learning” offers. ACOMIS is institutionally connected to the German Emigration Center, which not only has its award-winning permanent exhibition but also a comprehensive collection and a specialized library on migration and integration history.

The Research of ACOMIS

… will focus on comparative migration research, placing emphasis on everyday life, emotional, and biographical history. Researchers will work interdisciplinary with the extensive collection and the developing Oral History archive of the German Emigration Center. Planned collaborations include partnerships with university and non-university institutes and institutions of migration and integration research, both nationally and internationally.

The Educational Institute of ACOMIS

… has the task of conveying the history and present of integration and its significance for everyday life and society to children, adolescents, and adults. The museum education of the German Emigration Center will offer various formats: school classes will learn both factual and methodological competencies in intercultural education through exhibition and workshop projects. Teachers in schools and integration courses will receive training opportunities related to German and European migration history. For companies, authorities, associations, and educational institutions, ACOMIS offers workshops on intercultural communication skills and the teaching of German and European migration history.
