Action for International Women’s Day 2025
Making invisible stories visible: Women in migration history
On the occasion of International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, 2025, we invite you to consciously listen to the often-overlooked voices of women in migration.
What specific risks and challenges have been associated with migration for women historically and currently? What special role did migrant women play around 1900 in the labor movement in the USA? What shared experiences did women known as ‘guest workers’ in Germany have?
Visitors to the German Emigration Center currently find answers to these and other questions from gender and migration history through personal objects, stories, and reports in our permanent exhibition.
On International Women’s Day, only biographies of women will be issued at the museum ticket office, following the footsteps of which guests will explore.
This way, they can closely follow one of seven distinct emigration stories of women from station to station.
With this initiative, we aim to place a conscious emphasis on the experiences and voices of women in migration history, which often remain unnoticed and unheard.
