Special Exhibition “Allure of Outer Space”

Special Exhibition July 5, 2025 – January 7, 2026

For centuries, space has captivated humanity. The earliest signs of this allure can be traced back to the Stone Age and continue to the present day in art, history, and science. But what truly awaits us out there? Can we survive in space? And what does it mean for us as humanity to explore or even colonize distant planets? Is it possible to prevent an uncontrolled race that leaves the cosmos and its treasures to a few powerful individuals?

The German Emigration Center invites you on an exciting journey through visions of science fiction literature and contemporary art, through current research findings and socio-political questions about life on the Moon, Mars, and Venus. Together with experts from aerospace research, social sciences, literature, and art, we cast a longing yet critical eye on the allure of space. For the first time, an emigration museum addresses the question of space migration. Comparisons to historical emigration stories show that many themes repeat themselves when seriously considering the colonization of distant planets. The exhibition brings together scientific, artistic, and humanities perspectives to explore humanity’s relationship with space.

A central feature of the exhibition is the Election Forum Space Migration, where visitors can engage with the big questions of the exhibition and cast their votes. Young star travelers are playfully and creatively introduced to the exhibition through an interactive course.

The entrance fee to the special exhibition is included in the museum admission price. If you participate in a guided tour, only the museum admission needs to be paid; the tour itself is free.
