A glimpse into the digital future of museums

The museum4punkt0 showcase provided exciting insights into the modern museum landscape.

On June 24, 2022, the museum4punkt0 network’s showcase took place in Berlin as part of the nationwide Digital Day. Museums and cultural institutions from across the Federal Republic presented their respective projects at the center for cultural education on the so-called Museum Island in the capital, exchanging their expertise and visions in the field of digital communication. Culture State Minister Claudia Roth aptly referred to the network partners as ‘future inventors’ and clearly enjoyed testing the presented applications.

The evening before the showcase, Medhavi Gandhi from Delhi (The Heritage Lab) and Inka Drögemüller from New York (Metropolitan Museum of Art) provided interesting insights into the global trends of digital communication in the museum sector. Both speakers emphasized the importance of creating and expanding digital experimentation fields for museums, engaging (local) communities more actively in museum work, and cooperating across countries and institutions.

The following day, the showcase focused on reaching new target groups, active participation of visitors at the cultural venue of the museum, and sustainability in cultural communication. Spread across two floors of the modern building ‘Haus Bastian’, the projects invited experimentation – some already in the final phase, others still in the initial development stage. Both the professional audience and the numerous visitors to the showcase were eager to get an impression of the digital future of museums and marveled at what had been achieved so far.

The stand of the German Emigration Center attracted a lot of visitors. At the exhibition, the museum showcased the project ‘Young Digital Collection’, which specifically targets young people and encourages them to take an appreciative look at the artifacts of their everyday lives and actions. Playfully and intuitively, the young participants are also introduced to the core processes of museum work. Potential future users expressed their interest in the concept of the ‘Young Digital Collection’ while still on site in Berlin.
