Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia as guest

Hendrik Wüst, since 2021 the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the German Emigration Center during his political trip in the State of Bremen on April 12, 2023, and was guided through the exhibition by our director Dr. Simone Blaschka on that rainy spring afternoon.

Since 2021, our newly opened emigration section also deals with the history of the so-called “guest workers,” many of whom found jobs and sometimes new homes in the industrial cities along the Rhine and Ruhr, while at the same time having to fight for rights, such as equal pay in the industry, during the 1960s and 1970s. In 2019, over 5.3 million people in North Rhine-Westphalia had a migration background.
