Visit from Namibia

The well-known human rights advocate Uhuru Dempers, together with Uwe Beckmeyer, former senator and honorary consul of the Republic of Namibia, visited the German Emigration Center. There, they learned about the reasons why people boarded ships in Bremerhaven during the 19th and 20th centuries to begin a new life—mostly in America. This was made possible in America and worldwide due to the conquests of European colonial powers and the often violent appropriation of land.

In Namibia, formerly under German colonial rule, Uhuru Dempers has been advocating for social and economic justice for decades. He campaigns and participates in political bodies to promote education, land reform, and poverty alleviation.
