The Traces of German Emigration
Donna Webster’s ancestors emigrated from Germany to the USA in the 19th century. She is deeply engaged with her German roots and her own German-American identity. In Baltimore, she is not alone in this. To this day, descendants of German emigrants make up the largest percentage group among European emigrants. This is not surprising, as around two million immigrants entered the USA through Baltimore. Thus, the city in the state of Maryland is the second-largest immigration port after New York. German immigrants were part of this early on. As early as 1783, the ‘German Society of Maryland’ was founded to assist German immigrants upon their arrival in the USA.
