Spoon

Jelisaweta Kozak (Kosak) was born in 1985 in a small Ukrainian village as the daughter of a diploma farmer and a teacher. She studied law in the city of Zaporizhzhia, where she worked until the outbreak of war on February 24, 2022. At the beginning of the Russian invasion, she was on a ski holiday in the Carpathians. Together with her friend, she crossed the border into the EU and arrived in Bremen ten days later. The Zaporizhzhia region is still contested to this day. Parts of it were annexed by the Russian Federation on September 30, 2022. Initially, Jelisaweta Kozak found the gift from her parents, a spoon with her engraved name, too kitschy. Thus, the cutlery piece remained unused for a long time. However, she then took it on her ski holiday to distinguish the spoons better in outdoor conditions. After fleeing across the border, the spoon traveled to Bremen and is now part of the collection of the Deutsches Auswandererhaus.
