Certificate, 2001

Giovanni Minutolo is born in 1957 in the small town of Cariati Marina. In 1967, at the age of 10, he moves with his family from Italy to the Federal Republic in Stuttgart. Like many of their compatriots, his family hopes for a better life in the ‘economic miracle.’ However, the first years are not easy for the family and Giovanni Minutolo. Already as a child, he has to work as the oldest of 7 siblings to support his mother. His education suffers as a result. During this time, he experiences the darker sides of so-called ‘guest worker life’ in the Federal Republic, with poorly paid and dangerous jobs, as well as discrimination and racism shaping his youth. Nevertheless, Giovanni Minutolo later finds a good apprenticeship and attends evening school, opening up new opportunities for him in Germany. On November 8, 1976, he starts working as a laborer at Bosch, even without a school diploma. Within a few years, he advances from a starter to a group spokesperson. Over his 43-year career at Bosch, he continues to rise, working abroad for the company in countries such as Brazil and Spain. After all his negative experiences in Germany so far, he is now satisfied with his life.
