This program unites three giants of the Baroque who interpreted the trio sonata at the highest level. Telemann’s Trio in E minor TWV 42:E6 captivates with gallant elegance and the melodic lightness that made him the most popular composer of his time. Handel’s Sonata in D major HWV 385 displays his characteristic festive brilliance and an Italian-influenced cantability. The expressive counterpart is Zelenka’s Sonatas 1 and 6 ZWV 181: With their extreme chromaticism and the highly virtuosic, obligate bass parts, they challenge the performers musically and interpretatively in particular.
